Banner Quilt – Work in Progress

As if I don’t have enough projects going on, I started another quilt! I bought a couple fat quarters because I liked how they looked together. I didn’t have any plans for them. I started doodling and drawing and decided they would be perfect for this quilt I came up with.

It’s changed a little since then. I think it will be three rows of banners, all in the same direction.

Here’s the basic layout. I plan on spacing them out more, I was just figuring out their order. What do you think?

Weather, the Oscars, and a Quilt Top

I’m a little behind on sharing all of the wonderful things I’ve been up to, but I suppose that means I am keeping busy which I like. Nothing overwhelming, just a lot going on.

I actually watched all of the Oscars for the first time. (I told you I was a little behind, didn’t I?). I enjoyed it and have a big huge crush on Jean Dujardin because he said he loved America because we have these things called cinnamon rolls and you can take a right turn on red. Plus, he’s kind of gorgeous…and French.

Gus wasn’t so into the Oscars.

I’ve been working a little here and there on some of my sewing. I finished one quilt top that had been laying around forever. I had to sash the edges because I kept screwing it up and it just kept getting smaller and smaller. I love the fabric I used for it though.I’m planning on putting the same fabric on the back. It’s a flannel I picked up at Joann’s.

I’ve also been working (very slowly) on adding the hand quilting to my chevron quilt. It’s not my favorite activity, but I love the look so far.

I realized I forgot to share a photo of the finished top, so here it is.

Also, I think the weather has been a little crazy everywhere this winter, but I have to share some of my weird Indiana weather photos.

This first one (well two) were taken just a couple hours apart.

This next one was just too awesome not to share.

Furniture Shopping

A while back I posted about finding something to display my quilts in. I didn’t find exactly that, but I did find something I couldn’t pass up. This lovely piece. I was in love the moment I saw it. Not to mention it was a steal especially since some of the IKEA pieces I had been looking at were $100-$200 more!

I love it even more with my cameras all set up in it at home! Swoon! I totally shoved my dining room table into the corner of the room so this could be center stage.

I also came across this. A giant Nixon. Any takers?

Always Be Sure to Link with Love

Or as I like to call it, source your shit.

I love that people can share all the wonderful things they make and find on the internet, but too often, the image of the work gets separated from its original source. Posting images without linking back to where they originally came from hurts the person who made it. If I want to use an image in a post or share it with friends on tumblr or Pinterest, if I can’t find the source, I don’t use it.

There’s a new site trying to raise awareness of the importance of linking to original sources called Link with Love. While they are focused on making sure people add links throughout the internet, their main focus at the moment is Pinterest. I love using Pinterest, but often find myself getting frustrated when I can’t get to where the image originally came from. They are reaching out to Pinterest to help clean up the site now and reminding people to link when pinning things in the future.

Here is more information about their mission.

HOW it works.

LINKwithlove is EASY. It is an expansion of what we all do naturally. We watch out for the people we care about. We share things. We engage each other. More and more – our daily lives and social networking takes place on the internet. By looking out for the people we connect with via our social networks (blogs, Facebooks, Twitter, Pinterest, etc) we increase our watchfulness.

LINKwithlove is about :

  1. ACCEPTING that it is your responsibility to know better, do better and leave a legacy of internet kindness. Share the knowledge of proper use of intellectual property online.
  2. RESPECTING the intellectual property of your own AND OTHERS. Lead by example when posting or sharing. Retain links. Post credits.
  3. PROTECTING the rights of yourself and others by being watchful as you surf the internet. Draw attention to uncredited or unlinked work. A watchful eye is good defense against theft.

When we know better – WE DO BETTER. – Maya Angelou

LINKwithlove IS NOT ABOUT:

  1. Attending meetings, investing money or taking on extra responsibilities.
  2. Vigilante patrolling of the internet. (LINKwithlove simply involves being conscious of how you share information)
  3. Knowing who created every piece of intellectual property on the internet. All that is required is that you watch for the WAY in which things are credited. (A credit to the original source is FANTASTIC! Be sure you post respectfully and be sure that your social network knows that YOU RESPECT online property such as art, photography, words, etc.)
  4. Only art or photography.  This watch-idea can be effective for all types of intellectual property – art, photography, design, typography, illustration, music, film, recipes, education, crafts, ideas, written word, etc.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  1. SPREAD THE WORD. Share LINKwithlove.org with your social networks. Display your badge. Post with respect and love. Lead by example.
  2. Like us on FACEBOOK. Follow us on PINTEREST. Follow us on TWITTER. If you find a graphic without a credit link – post it to our Facebook page, Pinterest board – OR TWEET IT – by reaching a growing audience our hope is to find the original artist and provide the missing link.

Swoon Quilt Ideas

I probably won’t be working on this quilt for quite some time. I don’t even have the pattern yet. I have a lot of other projects I’ve got in my head and already bought fabric for so I feel like I should work through those before I get to a swoon quilt. I really really love it though. Here’s my color palette for what I’d like to use in my future Swoon quilt.

Here is my color palette.

I LOVE these colors. I hope I can eventually get to it soon!

First Indianapolis Modern Quilt Guild Meeting!

For me anyway. It was at my usual fabric store this past Saturday, so I decided to go check it out. I had a great time. Even though I sat at a table with some ladies I already sort of knew, I discovered one woman is my neighbor! We shared stories of awful neighbors because the neighborhood is a little sketchy. She calls it “transitional” which I thought was fitting.

The best part of the meeting was show-and-tell. It was so awesome to see what everyone else was working on and had finished. There were lots of people with different levels of experience so there was a wide range of designs and styles. Here are some of my favorites.

Sorry the photos are not the best. It was a packed house. There were over 20 attendees which was apparently the biggest turn out yet. I’m excited for the next meeting and getting to know these ladies better and see more of their projects.

If you are in the Indianapolis area and interested in joining, you can check out their blog for more info.

Quilt Storage

My quilt collection is beginning to grow. I am tempted by beautiful images of cabinets full of quilts to get something for my collection. That way if they aren’t being used I can still display them without the cats sleeping on them.

While I totally am in love with this first one, I know the kitties would love it too.

I love this one too, but it’s a little pricey for me at the moment. (IKEA $399)

I’m not sure about this color for my house, but the shape is nice (IKEA $249)

The colors of this one are great, but completely out of my price range. (The Bella Cottage $1895)

This isn’t at all what I am looking for, but I still think I need it in my life (Anthropologie)

Does anyone know of anywhere I can look for something like this. I browse craigslist from time to time, but never quite find what I’m looking for.

Single Girl Baby Quilt

I am so thrilled! I finally finished my Single Girl baby-sized quilt. I just worked on it a little at a time. The quilting was kind of difficult. I can’t imagine doing it on a larger quilt. I’m planning on taking some better pictures, but it was fresh out of the dryer and I was too excited.

Here are a few work in progress photos.

New baby quilt layout and Valentine’s dessert

So things have been busy, as usual. Just lots of work things. I haven’t been able to do a lot of sewing, not to mention once I get home, I don’t really feel like doing much of anything except lay on the couch and watching trashy tv. I did recently start watching Archer, as in I started it to days ago and finished the first season yesterday.

I have been doing a little sewing. Last Saturday, I went to Downtown Sewcial at Crimson Tate. However, I forgot my phone so there are no photos of this awesome time. I got a request from the shop I sell stuff at in Chicago for some iPad cases, so I whipped a few of those up and got them sent off yesterday. I think I am going to make more and in different styles. I also have three (or maybe four, but I’ll save that for another day) quilts in the works. I have my personal project, the Solid Chevron Quilt. I’ve been pressing seams like crazy mostly. I got all of the squares sewn, now I just have to put them all together.

I’ve also been working on the quilting for the baby-sized Single Girl blanket. I love it, but the quilting is totally exhausting.

Then, while going through some boxes, I found a stash of pieces left over from the Bow Tie Quilt I made a while back. Instead of making a matching one, I mixed the pieces up and started sewing them together. I didn’t get much done, but it’s a start.

For Valentine’s day I made these. They are super intense. It’s a lot of chocolate. I wanted to dip them in white chocolate, but when warming up the white chocolate…I kind of burnt it…and totally ruined it. There was no salvaging it. Oh well.

Also, I applied for a pretty awesome craft fair here in the summer, so I am hoping I get in.

That’s all for now. Hopefully I will have more for you next week than I did last week. I have Monday off for President’s Day and I’ll be going to my first Indianapolis Modern Quilt Guild meeting on Saturday. Hopefully it will fire up my motivation to actually finish something.

Pillow case and Gus Sews

I went to Downtown Sewcial this weekend. It was super busy. There are usually only three or four people including myself and this weekend there were EIGHT ladies. It was so much fun and I had such a good time. I wanted to take some photos, but my phone went missing (which ended up just being in my car).

Anyway, I bought fabric I didn’t really need, but of course I HAD to have. One thing I decided to make was pillowcases from the Maria Anna Horner voile. I only finished one so far, but it is WONDERFUL! Gus really likes it too. (Sorry it’s blurry)

Also, Gus keeps discovering ways to make it harder for me to get anything done.
